The Peacock Blue pendant occupies a fascinating place in the history of royal jewelry and Kashmir blue sapphires. Its reported combination of royal heritage, exceptional gemstone size and distinctive sugarloaf cabochon cut makes it a subject of considerable interest among gemstone enthusiasts, antique jewelry specialists and high-value collectors. While online authors give a consistent narrative, the pendant or the gemstone remains a mystery.

Historical accounts associate the Peacock Blue pendant with the Dogra dynasty, which effectively ruled Jammu and Kashmir from 1846 until the end of princely rule in 1947. The second Maharaja, Ranbir Singh, ruled from 1856 to 1885. The pendant is reported to have been presented by the Maharaja, to an foreign diplomat following his official service in the region, thus connecting this remarkable jewel with an important period in Kashmir’s royal history.

    A Remarkable Kashmir Blue Sapphire

The gemstone at the center of the Peacock Blue story is reported to weigh more than 13 grams, equivalent to over 65 carats. Its reported weight of 60-plus carats, combined with its sugarloaf cabochon cut, places it among the most intriguing large Kashmir blue sapphires discussed by collectors.

A sugarloaf cabochon has a domed, gently curved profile rising towards a rounded apex, rather than the numerous flat facets associated with brilliant-cut gemstones. This style can showcase the depth of a sapphire’s color and its characteristic visual softness. In fine Kashmir blue sapphires, the celebrated velvety appearance results partly from microscopic inclusions, that scatter light within the gemstone.

High-quality Kashmir blue sapphires weighing 10 carats or more are highly sought after. Their appeal rests on exceptional color, rarity, historic provenance and the limited availability of comparable stones. A gemstone exceeding 60 carats in this category commands particular attention because, very few Kashmir sapphires of such substantial size are encountered in the international collector market.

Kashmir’s Brief Golden Age of Sapphire Mining

The historical importance of Kashmir sapphires is inseparable from the short period during which, the finest material was recovered. A landslide exposed the famous deposit in 1881, and organized mining followed between 1882 and 1887. This short period became known for producing, some of the finest and largest blue sapphires ever recovered from the region. The original Old Mine was largely depleted by the late 1880s, and subsequent mining did not reproduce the same exceptional abundance of top-quality material.

This brief mining history explains why large, fine Kashmir blue sapphires remain so desirable. Their scarcity, distinctive velvety blue color and historical associations continue to attract serious collectors worldwide.

    The Importance of Public Authentication

The Peacock Blue pendant deserves renewed attention from the international gemstone community. A public exhibition or a prestigious auction conducted by Sotheby’s or Christie’s would provide an opportunity for specialists to examine the jewel, document its provenance and establish the gemstone’s characteristics. Independent examination by a respected gemological laboratory would further strengthen its historical and scientific documentation.

The pendant’s present whereabouts and the identity and condition of its reported sapphire remain unconfirmed. Its story nevertheless brings together royal history, gemstone rarity and the enduring fascination surrounding Kashmir’s finest sapphires.

A documented reappearance would offer collectors and historians an opportunity to evaluate one of the most intriguing stories associated with a large sugarloaf Kashmir blue sapphire. Until then, the Peacock Blue remains a compelling subject in the continuing history of exceptional royal gemstones.
